Dionisio Derteano Echenique

LIMA, PERÚ

Congressman, financier, and patriot. Founded the Banco Nacional del Perú and managed the Dreyfus Contract — Peru's largest financial instrument of the 19th century. When Chilean forces invaded Lima in 1880, Dionisio Derteano organized the national defense, financed resistance operations, and lost £1,000,000 — his entire estate — rather than pay tribute to the occupying army. He fought at the Battle of Miraflores. He was arrested, exiled to Chile, and held prisoner. From captivity, he worked diplomatic channels — including direct communication with U.S. Congressman allies — to negotiate Peru's peace treaty. He directed irrigation of the Rímac River basin. He founded the Club de la Unión. He built institutional Peru with his own hands. There is no monument to his name. There will be.

Pedro Paulet Mostajo

In a private laboratory in Paris, a Peruvian engineer from Arequipa built the world's first liquid-propellant rocket engine — and the first thrust vector control system. Pedro Paulet Mostajo was 21 years old. He published nothing, filed nothing, claimed nothing — and was forgotten for decades. It was Wernher von Braun, the architect of the Apollo program, who acknowledged Paulet as the true pioneer of modern rocketry. NASA recognized him. Peru honored him on its 100-soles banknote. Asteroid 4443 Paulet was named in his honor. Google published a global Doodle. He invented jet propulsion before the Wright Brothers flew. He was Peruvian. He was from Arequipa. His surname was Mostajo.
